Wedding Cake Delivery Guide: The Bluebell Recipe

2 women cake makers carrying a large 5 tier wedding cake filled with sugar flowers into a wedding venue

Working together to design your showstopping wedding cake is a lovely journey that we so enjoy going on with you. From the moment we meet in our studio in Maidstone, Kent to the day we start exploring colour palettes, styles and textures, a lot of time, attention and love gets baked into your wedding cake. By the time your big day rolls around we’re always so excited to reveal your scrumptious design.  We ensure it is delivered and set up in a way that does it justice and keeps it looking and tasting its best. We have put together this wedding cake delivery guide to let you know exactly what you can expect from us on your wedding day.  Nothing to chance where cake is involved!

The Bluebell Kitchen Wedding Cake Delivery Guide

The first thing you should know is that we deliver every wedding cake ourselves. Once you have entrusted us to make your luxury cake, the idea is that you can relax and let us take care of everything related to your delectable dessert. We wouldn’t expect anyone else to have the pressure of taking your cake to your venue.  If we’re honest we wouldn’t trust them to either! The sweetest thing for us is for you to walk into your reception room and find everything just as you envisioned, working in harmony; from the room layout to the florals and, of course the cake. Here are a few things we will do when we arrive to make sure this happens…

1. Wedding Cake Maker or Weight Lifter?

Many people don’t realise just how much wedding cakes can weigh (we ought to have arms like Popeye by now!).  Often we assemble the cake and its finishing touches in situ. This also means none of the delicate adornments or exquisite sugar flowers can become damaged in transit. However, we don’t just walk into your venue and begin setting up without checking a few things first!

2. Ensuring Your Wedding Cake Delivery is Perfect

We’ve been known to ask venues to move the cake table if we think there is any possibility your sweet treat will get damaged. This could be for a variety of reasons, but most often it’s to do with the weather as sunlight on a very hot day can really ruin a cake! Once we’re happy your cake is in a safe spot where it will be proudly displayed, we turn to the cake stand and assembly.

We always recommend hiring our cake stands, as every now and again the traditional stands owned by venues aren’t in the best condition. The stands we hire out are strong enough to hold a very heavy, multi-tiered cake, and are also taller than traditional stands to help make your cake more of a show-stopping centrepiece. When your cake is on its stand we will then make sure it’s actually standing up straight.  This is particularly important in marquees or older venues where the floor is uneven. We have lots of tips and tricks to rectify a cake table that’s ‘on the wonk’!

3. Keeping Your Venue and Caterer Informed

It’s also important for you to know that we’ll be in touch with your venue or caterer at least 7-10 days prior to your wedding day, so we can work out the best time for us to set up your cake to keep it in captivating condition. We’ll liaise with them about the key information they need to know, including cake flavours, allergens and details on how to remove sugar flowers and other decorations from the cake before cutting to serve. The idea is that we can provide all the details and answer any questions without having to involve you on your wedding day!

4. Setting Up Your Wedding Cake

We really believe your cake should take pride of place and be carefully considered in your overall wedding design.  Popping it down on a plain, circular table in the corner of a room or behind a pillar (it’s been known to happen!) is a surefire way to dull the sparkle of your luscious luxury. Consider decorating your cake table with runners, complementary cake stands and even candles or tealights. After investing so carefully in it, it deserves to provide the ‘wow’ factor as intended!

5. Floral Finishing Touches

Finally, we often get asked whether your florist can add fresh flowers to your cake after set-up. We’re aware some cake makers do allow this.  However at Bluebell Kitchen we don’t use fresh floristry flowers on any of our designs and we wouldn’t want someone else to add anything either. We design and create your cake especially for you, and when it arrives it is the finished article. It feels similar to us trying to alter your bridal bouquet or making changes to your menu! If you love the idea of florals for your wedding cake (we do too!), we pride ourselves on creating beautiful blooms with sugarcraft. They look exquisite, detailed and realistic and will last forever if kept as instructed.
