Carousels, country houses and the most gorgeous buttercream wedding cake

Bluebell Kitchen buttercream wedding cake

We love this time of year as it’s all about looking back over the past few months at some of the gorgeous weddings that we’ve had the chance to be a small part of!  It’s the perfect time for a little throwback to one of our favourite and most unusual wedding cakes of the year.

We met first Rosina and Stuart at the epic wedding show that was Brides The Show back in 2016 and after coming along to our Spring Tasting Weekend knew that their wedding was going to be truly unique and special to them.  After what seemed to be enquiry after enquiry for naked cakes it was fantastic to talk cornflower blue buttercream, handmade sugar flowers and gold!  We knew this was going to be an opportunity to get truly creative!  The piece de resistance finding out that they were having a carousel as part of their wedding too…we were in!

They married at Preston Court, which is based just outside of Canterbury in Kent.  It is an eclectic venue complete with a 12th century church (St Mildred’s), beautiful manor house and of course said Victorian carousel.

Making the cornflower blue buttercream proved to be a little more difficult than we first thought and involved trying to match to our ribbon swatches, the couple emailing samples and making multiple small amounts of buttercream to try to achieve the colour we wanted.  Of course, once we’d found the perfect colour scaling it up to cover a large three tier wedding cake wasn’t quite so easy and meant lots of notes about colour combinations just in case we ever do something like this again!  Sugar flowers are our speciality and whilst we are used to creating flowers that are as realistic as possible it was a brand new experience making flowers, which we would need to completely hand paint in edible gold…a lot of gold!

We have had such a wonderful response to their wedding cake, which was a passion fruit sponge by the way.  The couple adored it!  It also inspired us to reinvent it as a show cake, took it along to The Luxury Wedding Fair in October this year where it became the hit of our show stand and whenever it pops up on social media always gets such a positive response.

Thank you to Rosina and Stuart for letting us share some of their beautiful photos taken by Rebecca Douglas Photography…who by coincidence earlier this year took photos for our website as part of our brand photoshoot.
