Kent Wedding Cake – Gold Wedding Cake at Bradbourne House

Four Tier Gold Lace Sugar Flower Wedding Cake in Blush Pink and Ivory

It goes without saying that we can’t pick favourites, but if we were to, this cake – and its couple, Michelle and Sean – would definitely be one of them. From start to finish, they were a total pleasure to work with, and the brief for their Bradbourne House wedding was a dream. The experience of creating their sugar flower wedding cake was simply a joy, as we got to play with so many personalised elements that reflected their story!

As we know designing a unique wedding cake can be an appealing but overwhelming idea, we wanted to use their cake to show you how the experience works. If you’re thinking about a personalised show-stopper of a cake, but don’t know where to start: we’ve got you…

What do you need for a personalised wedding cake?

Michelle and Sean originally came to us for our cake popsicle favours – which they ingeniously doubled up as their seating plan – but once we started chatting, they realised they couldn’t resist a sugar flower wedding cake for their Bradbourne House wedding too. In their own words, Michelle and Sean ‘aren’t creative types so couldn’t provide intricate designs’, but they’d come prepared with reference images and a real willingness to chat it through, which is all we ever need from our wonderful couples. At their consultation, they had rough idea of what they wanted, but weren’t sure how to translate what was in their head to the page (and then, eventually, to the cake stand!) – and that’s where we can come in.

From Sketch to Wedding Cake!

If this is you, please don’t worry – we love sitting down and really getting into your cake design with our couples, chatting through your inspirations, likes and dislikes. In fact, it’s one of our favourite parts of the wedding cake process, because the feeling when we nail your design is second to none.  Ok, second only to one: seeing how much you enjoy the cake on the actual day itself.

Michelle and Sean’s totally unique sugar flower wedding cake

We ended up combining all of their different inspiration points in a dazzling four-tier sugar flower wedding cake that was created entirely for them. Each layer showed off a different decoration technique: the bottom layer featured handmade icing ruffles, the third layer a hand painted satin shimmer effect, the second layer intricate lace detailing and the top layer was finished in a fine gold glitter technique. Though each layer was unique and special in its own right, they came together in beautiful harmony – a good metaphor for marriage, we think…

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Bluebell Kitchen sugar flower wedding cake without sugar flowers, would it?! Both gold layers – the first and third layer – were adorned with cascading, hand made sugar flowers to match the blooms on the day. As a surprise for Sean, we also worked with Michelle in secret to make sure the lace design of the second tier matched her wedding dress. She’d sneakily sent us a picture of her stunning wedding dress and asked if it was possible, so whilst we didn’t reference it in any of our emails or sketches, we were always working with this in mind. He didn’t find out until the day itself, when Michelle pointed it out, and they were both overjoyed at how it had turned out.

Michelle and Sean had a peach and prosecco flavour for their sugar flower wedding cake, one of our favourites due to it being a fresh, fruity take on a timeless classic. They chose a modern salted caramel flavour for their chocolate-covered cake popsicles, and we also put together a dessert table of brownie bites, blondie bites, mini cupcakes, mini doughnuts and chocolate dipped strawberries for the evening guests.

The joy of going totally bespoke

One of our firmest beliefs here at Bluebell Kitchen is that no-one should go cakeless, so we also made a separate Michelle and Sean their own separate 4 inch wedding cake, so that they could take it home, and enjoy it when they wanted, in case they missed out on the day. We also made a separate gluten free cutting cake to account for their guests’ dietary requirements. When you go for a bespoke wedding cake, all of these options, and more, are available!

A beautiful Bradbourne House wedding

We couldn’t reminisce on this wonderful experience without giving a shout out to Bradbourne House wedding venue, too. It’s one of our absolute favourite local venues, an elegant country house set in the heart of the Kent countryside. With beautiful rooms and breath-taking grounds (containing gardens, a lake, and a waterfall, no less!), it’s no wonder that every Bradbourne House wedding is totally magical. Michelle and Sean’s was certainly no exception.
