Kent Wedding Cake – Macarons and Sugar Flowers at The Orangery Maidstone for Georgina and Oliver

Here at Bluebell Kitchen, we’re of course big fans of having your cake and eating it too. So if you’re struggling to decide between a wedding cake with macarons or sugar flowers – we say: why do you have to choose? That’s exactly what we did with Georgina and Oliver for their Kent wedding cake at The Orangery in Maidstone, landing on a beautiful wedding cake decorated with macarons and sugar flowers!

They won their wedding cake!

We first met Georgina and Oliver at The Wedding Experience show all the way back in 2019. If you’ve never been, The Wedding Experience is Kent’s biggest wedding show, with everything you can think of wedding-wise on display (and probably some things you’ve never considered, too!)

To launch our mailing list (get in touch to join it here) and to celebrate the upcoming few years (ah, how little did we know!) we organised a giveaway during the show, giving one lucky couple the chance to win their wedding cake. Out of a hat, we picked Georgina and Oliver’s wedding at The Orangery, Maidstone, planned for Spring 2020…and finally realised in late Autumn 2021.

A wedding cake with macarons and sugar flowers

At the initial consultation, the couple were blown away by our sugar flowers – we were actually super flattered, as they couldn’t believe that they weren’t real! – but also had their heart set on a design they’d never seen before. They wanted to incorporate macarons, without having a macaron tower: was it possible, they asked?

HECK YEAH! We replied – which is always our favourite thing to say in response to our couples’ ideas. If you love macarons but you also love cake, you don’t have to pick between them.

We showed them the macaron wedding cake we’d designed for the lovely Madeleine and James’  London wedding at Claridges , which featured an ombré cascade of blush pink macarons flowing artfully down four tiers of iced sponge. Georgina and Oliver fell in love on sight, and so we used this as the initial inspiration for their bespoke design.

It’s all in the details – creating their dream wedding cake with macarons

We love couples who don’t want a copycat cake (even if it’s one of our cakes they’re in love with!), but want to work with us to create a totally unique wedding cake, and Georgina and Oliver wanted just that. We brought their fresh colour palette of spring pastels to life in their wedding cake with macarons and sugar flowers, using light pinks and peaches. A sugar flower peony topped the cake, as they’re one of Georgina’s favourite flowers; plus, she thought the sugar versions were particularly elegant.

To make it really pop, gold accents featured too. Eucalyptus also added depth with its green hue, as well as texture. The couple were big on texture throughout the design of their wedding day at The Orangery, Maidstone, so we wanted to find a way to add some more to their wedding cake. We suggested adding delicate edible lace to the design, so that texture was present but wouldn’t distract or detract from the other elements.

It’s a fine balance, because of course on a wedding cake with macarons and sugar flowers, abundance is key, but we also wanted to make sure it looked elegant and not too crowded! The final result was delicate, harmonious, and delicious.

Creating Indulgent, citrus-y flavours

If anything, the flavours were even more important to the couple than the design of their wedding cake with macarons and sugar flowers (and don’t get us wrong: that was very important to them too!) They took the choice very seriously, and spent a long time considering what would complement the macarons.

The macarons were predominantly Madagascan vanilla, with a scattering of salted caramel too (because let’s be honest: who doesn’t love gooey, salted caramel?) By contrast and by design, their cake choices burst with citrus flavours: carrot cake with a hint of orange; peach, passion fruit and mango; and Valencian Chocolate Orange.

A beautiful Kent wedding at The Orangery, Maidstone – at last!

Three lockdowns, three postponements and eighteen months later Georgina and Oliver finally got to tie their knot at The Orangery, Maidstone, in late Autumn 2021! Even the sun seemed to have got the memo, as despite the Autumn date the weather was almost summery.

We displayed the cake on our huge gold pedestal stand, surrounded by candles and scattered petals created by their florist, Floral Explosion. The wedding planner loved the design so much, she even took a quick preview picture and went racing off to show Georgina whilst we were still setting up – so we knew it was worth the wait!

Finally! Georgina and Oliver with their gorgeous four tier wedding cake

But don’t just take our word for it: here’s what the lovely couple had to say for themselves:

We wanted to say a huge thank you for our stunning cake. It really was an incredible cake, we’ve never seen one like it! Being a winner of a (wedding) cake as gorgeous as that, I felt so lucky. We had so many compliments on the cake, it really was a showstopper and the flavours were perfection.”
