8 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Cake Maker Before Your Consultation

There’s no shortage of wedding planning advice online, but when it comes to your cake, knowing the right questions to ask your wedding cake maker can make the whole process feel much easier. As wedding cake makers working with couples across Kent, Surrey, Sussex and London, we’re often asked how the design process works and what couples should ask before booking.

Whether you’re planning a wedding in the Kent countryside or in the heart of London, these are the questions we believe really matter.

The Most Important Questions to Ask Your Wedding Cake Maker

1. Where Is Our Wedding Cake Made?

A simple question to ask your wedding cake maker but an important one. Bluebell Kitchen is a private cake studio based in Maidstone, Kent. Our kitchen was purposely designed for our work (including two ovens dedicated entirely to wedding cakes and macarons) and every sponge, filling and macaron is baked here.

We are fully inspected by our local authority and maintain the highest food safety standards.

For you (our couples) this means complete control, consistency and craftsmanship. Nothing is outsourced or mass produced. Every sponge, filling, macaron and decorative detail is made by us in our Kent studio.

This is one of the most important questions to ask your wedding cake maker because at the heart of what we do is creating a balance of homemade precision and expert design.

2. Can we choose different flavours for each tier?

Absolutely and we encourage it.

Your wedding cake is one of the few elements of your day that we encourage every one of your guests to experience. Choosing different flavours across tiers adds surprise, generosity and personality. As part of your wedding cake consultation in Kent, we guide you through flavour pairings that feel balanced and delicious.

You might choose something bold and contrasting:

  • Warm cinnamon spiced toffee apple sponge with vanilla buttercream and blackberry jam
  • Coconut sponge with creamy coconut buttercream and homemade blueberry jam
  • Rich chocolate sponge with a hint of Valencian orange buttercream
Tall slice of peach melba sponge cake finished with fresh peaches and raspberries. Complemented with a gold dessert fork and napkin
Tall slice of raspberry red velvet sponge cake complement with fresh raspberries and blackberries
We always encourage you to choose different flavours for each tier of your wedding cake

Or perhaps a more delicate, harmonious trio:

  • Zesty lemon with delicate passion fruit and mango for a light tropical twist
  • Orange blossom scented sponge with smooth almond buttercream
  • Marc de Champagne & strawberry infused sponge filled with layers of the lightest buttercream and champagne and strawberry conserve

If you’re unsure what works together, we’re more than happy to make suggestions as to what might complement your main wedding dessert. And on the day? We provide elegant flavour cards so your guests know exactly which slice they’re enjoying.

If you are in the early stages of planning and would love to experience our flavours before having your wedding cake consultation, our Cake Tasting Jars of Delight are the perfect place to start. Each Cake Tasting Box includes three of our most popular flavours prepared in individual tasting jars just for you and released once a month.

3. Will We See the Design Before the Wedding?

Always. Every cake we create is entirely bespoke. We don’t begin with templates. We start with your venue, your style and the atmosphere you want to create on the day.

After booking, we prepare:

• A detailed hand-drawn working sketch
• A personalised design mood board
• Colour and texture considerations based on your venue

This ensures you can visualise your cake clearly within your wedding setting whether that’s a historic Kent manor house or a contemporary London venue. We always catch up with you closer to your wedding date to discuss your sketch and mood board. We’re so pleased to say that often couples turn their sketch into a keepsake and even display it as part of their wedding menu styling.

4. When Do You Start Making Our Wedding Cake?

The process begins long before the first sponge goes into the oven. From the moment you secure your date, we begin shaping your bespoke design. Much of our work happens quietly behind the scenes and it’s often the part couples don’t see.

We research your venue carefully, considering scale, light and setting. We liaise with your florist, planner and stylist to ensure colours, proportions and textures feel cohesive. Your cake should feel like a natural part of your wedding day rather than something added at the last minute.

We usually create elements such as handmade sugar flowers and bespoke decorative features months in advance.

As your Kent wedding cake makers, when it comes to baking, we work backwards from your wedding date to ensure perfect flavour and texture. For a Saturday wedding, baking typically begins on Tuesday, allowing each sponge to settle for 24 hours. Each tier is double layered for structure, filled with a rich buttercream and homemade jams then coated in Belgian white chocolate ganache, before being finished in wafer thin fondant or smooth buttercream.

The final assembly and detailing take place just before delivery, with finishing touches sometimes added on the morning of your wedding.

5. Do You Deliver and Set Up the Cake?

On your wedding day, we deliver and style your cake with care and precision. We liaise directly with your venue and planner in advance, ensuring seamless coordination. This is true whether we’re delivering your wedding cake to a countryside estate in Kent or an iconic London venue.

From structural assembly to final finishing touches, every element is handled discreetly and professionally. Your only responsibility is to enjoy the moment it’s revealed.

6. How Do We Know What Size or Design We Need?

One of the most common questions to ask your wedding cake maker is how big your cake should be. This is where expert guidance makes all the difference. You don’t need to decide on tier sizes or intricate details before your wedding cake consultation.

To begin, we simply need:

  • Your wedding date
  • Your venue
  • An approximate guest count

Most Bluebell Kitchen couples invest between £850 and £1,400 for their bespoke wedding cake, with final pricing depending on guest numbers and the complexity of the design. From there, we’ll help you decide on the size, proportions and design details that will work best for your venue and guest numbers.

We’ll discuss and guide you as to how your wedding cake will work in your venue

7. What If We’re Not Sure What We Want Yet?

That’s completely normal. There’s so much information available that it can sometimes feel a little overwhelming especially if family or friends are telling you that you must include one thing or another. Your wedding cake consultation is a relaxed conversation held either at our Maidstone studio in Kent or via video call. There is no expectation that you arrive with a fully formed concept. We’ll ask questions, listen to your ideas and help you shape them into a design that feels right for you.

8. Do We Feel Comfortable Working Together?

Beyond flavours, delivery and sketches, that is probably the one question that matters most: Do you feel comfortable with us?

You should feel understood, respected and confident in the process. As your wedding cake designer, we want you to feel confident and excited throughout the whole process. We design wedding cakes for couples who want something deeply personal and genuinely delicious.
