Ombre Wedding Cake with Macarons: How a Claridges wedding Set a New Trend

When Madeleine and James approached us with their idea for their wedding cake, we knew they needed something extraordinary—something that would work perfectly with the grandeur of Claridges Hotel in London while introducing a fresh and playful twist. The result was an ombre wedding cake with macarons that not only fulfilled their dreams but also set a new trend at Bluebell Kitchen.

A New Era in Wedding Cake Design

At the time we designed Madeleine & James’ wedding cake, macarons were just beginning to be considered as something to add to your design.  We collaborated with Madeleine and James on the style – a wedding cake that was fun, unusual and matched the vibrant energy of their wedding reception, all while maintaining the sumptuous elegance of the venue.  The Claridges Ballroom, renowned for its timeless elegance and opulent charm, provided the perfect backdrop for a London wedding cake that would make a lasting impression.

Tumbling Cascade of Ombre Macarons

We ensured the focal point of the cake, a tumbling cascade of ombre macarons in delicate blush tones, would sit alongside their lush floral arrangements without getting lost. They really wanted to make a statement with their ombre wedding cake with macarons, which is always music to our ears! Whilst the design itself exudes simplicity, it also commands attention.  Madeleine and James said:

“Thank you both sooo much!!! The cake was absolutely perfect, everything (we) dreamed of and more.”

Its placement in the centre of the ballroom ensured all eyes were on it, the gaze drawn by the soft transition of colours through four tiers of macarons – each carefully placed to seem as though they’re naturally falling down the cake.

A Trendsetting London Wedding Cake with Macarons

The success of their macaron wedding cake has had an impact on the style of wedding cakes that we design. Since Madeleine and James’ wedding, a number of couples have chosen their own uniquely designed wedding cake with macarons.

Couples are increasingly drawn to the versatility of macarons, often choosing designs that feature a range of colours, flavours and styles.  We think that the chance to personalise your macarons to match their wedding’s theme or colour palette has also made these designs increasingly popular.

Of course it’s also helped that its unique design makes it standout on social media like Instagram and Pinterest, which was very true for Joyce and Matt’s guests:

“…The cake definitely stole the show and at one point we had people lining up to take photos of (and with!) it – it was truly a work of art and tasted as delicious as it looked.”

Creating Your Perfect Ombre Wedding Cake with Macarons

Macaron wedding cakes are all about fun, elegance, and creating a memorable experience. They allow for endless colour options and flavour combinations, and their bite-sized nature makes them perfect for guests to enjoy throughout the celebration.

Macarons can be used in such a variety of ways, from a cascade as part of a wedding cake with macarons to more curated, intentional placement as part of a macaron tower.

Macarons can also be combined with other feature elements such as sugar flowers, or as a macaron tower which sits below the tiers of wedding cake. We also love how many different ways they can be designed, with almost any colour imaginable a possibility. Lots of couples love this ombre style and pastels remain popular, but vibrant jewel tones, gold leaf pattern and even hand painted designs are becoming more popular.

Bite size dessert experience

Of course, it’s not just about the design. Macaron wedding cakes offer something incredibly special – flavour. Each macaron can be filled with any number of delicious fillings, from the classic salted caramel and pistachio to adventurous flavours like coconut and blueberry or sweet lavender and blackberry. We take pride in ensuring each macaron is a perfect match for the overall flavour profile of your cake.

There’s always the option to mix and match flavours, so your guests are tempted with a variety of choices. And because macarons are bite-sized, they can try several flavours, creating a fun and interactive dessert experience.
